Paul Fisher Previews Derbyshire CCC's Season For 2012

Wednesday 4th April 2012

by PAUL FISHER

Paul Fisher Previews Derbyshire CCC's Season For 2012It will be a slightly different Derbyshire in 2012, gone are the experienced trio of Luke Sutton and Stefan Jones through retirement, and Greg Smith chose Division Two rivals Essex as his next port of call.

The Falcons have decided that youth is the best policy - and who can argue with that - with players from the Academy getting international honours for England U17's & U19's.

Tom Knight, the 18 year old who broke through towards the middle of the summer last season was one of the starlets, along with Ross Whiteley, who averaged 40 in first class cricket with a sparkling second half of the season.

New Derbyshire skipper, Wayne Madsen, is expecting the youth and experience to be a good mix in the forthcoming season.

New Derbyshire skipper, Wayne Madsen, is expecting the youth and experience to be a good mix in the forthcoming season.Madsen, (left) who took over from the retiring Luke Sutton, had deputised for the wicketkeeper/skipper for some Pro 40 matches towards the back end of the season and is fully backing his young charges, "It's good to develop the youngsters and the club's plan is to build on their experiences.

"They have performed, it's what the Academy is all about and recognised at national level. We want to do better than last season, we want to make finals day in the 20/20 competition."

Madsen is looking forward to seeing Martin Guptill and Usman Khawaja again, "They are great for the dressing room, both are popular players here and we think that Rana Naved will also be good for us."

Derbyshire's Head Coach, Karl Krikken, (below), also thinks that the blend that Derbyshire have of the old and young will push the county further, "We've still got some decent experienced players. We are a young side, but we are definitely improving and moving in the right direction.

"We need to compete and believe that we can win every game. We look at other squads of other sides and we are certainly up there. When we started the academy a few years back, we wanted to produce players and we are on the verge of something big."

Despite Krikken's confidence, sadly yet again, the bookies make Derbyshire 16/1 to win Division Two outright, only one above last season's wooden spoon winners, Leicestershire, who Derbyshire finished a full 93 points better off than in fifth place.

Derbyshire's season kicks off on Thursday at home to Northamptonshire (11am start) in the County Championship Divison Two.

DCCC COMMITTEE ELECTION RESULTS ARE ANNOUNCED

Behind the scenes at Derbyshire, the Committee elections ahve also taken place and the results of the 2012 General Committee election were announced at the Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 28th March.

Name Votes Received Term To Serve

Robert Tice 273 Three Years
John Brown 262 Three Years
David Skipworth 238 Three Years
Ian Gange 218 Three Years
Trevor Island 199 Not Elected

David Griffin and Malcolm Nicholas were re-elected unopposed for the posts of Honorary Secretary and Honorary Treasurer, respectively.

In the Committee Meeting that followed, Phil Kirby stood down from the position of Vice-Chairman after a 13-year tenure and was succeeded by David Booth.

Booth, who is Managing Director of one of the Club's Official Partners, Office Care, said: "I'm delighted to step up my involvement at Derbyshire County Cricket Club and I'm looking forward to working with the Chairman and my fellow committee members, as we aim to take the Club forward both on and off the field.

"With an exciting crop of young players now making their mark on the first team, this is a great time to watch cricket at the County Ground and Chesterfield. I wish both the on-field and off-field teams all the very best for the forthcoming Summer."

Chairman Chris Grant said: "I would like to thank Phil Kirby for his sterling service during his time in the role as Vice-Chairman.

"I'm also greatly honored to have the opportunity of serving the Club as Chairman for another year and congratulations to David Booth on his appointment. I'm very much looking forward to working with David in his new position."
