Junior Membership of Derbyshire County Cricket Club has topped 1,000.

To celebrate, junior members - who can attend all Derbyshire home cricket throughout the season for FREE - can bring their parents, relatives, neighbours and any other guests to the Clydesdale Bank 40 match versus Warwickshire Bears on Bank Holiday Monday, 4th June, also for FREE.

It's taken just two years to reach the remarkable landmark - and the Club will continue to recruit throughout the summer with more joining every day.

After the decision to make Junior Membership free ahead of the 2010 campaign, the Club was rewarded with the ECB Business of Cricket Award for Best Membership campaign in the promotion's inaugural summer.

The concept has since continued to gather momentum, culminating in the recent landmark following two years of recruitment, linked largely to community events such as the ECB Cricket Factory in the Westfield Centre and Derbyshire Cricket Board's work in schools through the Chance to Shine initiative.

"Once we had the idea, the decision to take the plunge into free junior membership wasn't difficult," said Derbyshire County Cricket Club's Keith Loring who pioneered the scheme.

"The benefits are profound and obvious, plus I knew the enthusiasm of our marketing team would quickly ensure its popularity.

"Having 23 Junior Members each paying £20 was a chocolate fireguard to the Club; whereas we now have the supporters of the future fully engaged - and it makes commercial sense, because kids bring parents.

"By taking away the cost element of a junior ticket, hopefully we have removed the financial barriers involved in bringing along the whole family for a day of sporting entertainment.

"It's always a pleasure to see so many kids enjoying matches at the County Ground," Loring continued. "And the impromptu games of cricket played around the ground on match-days have become a real feature.

"It's also great to see our players signing autographs at the end of a match; something they are always more than happy to do which provides an additional 'wow' factor for the kids to take away."

New Chief Executive Simon Storey said: "To be in such a strong position regarding junior membership is very positive for the future of the Club. Keith has left an excellent legacy and the challenge for us now is to continue the recruitment, engage the parents and to retain as many of them as possible through their teenage years and into adulthood.

"To have so many young supporters registered with the Club demonstrates our standing within the community and it speaks volume for the popularity of Derbyshire County Cricket Club throughout the county.

"There is scope to increase that still further and we will be continuing to strive for increased support of all demographics in the coming years."
