Madsen Thrilled With Wet Win

Wayne Madsen (below) was rightly delighted with his sides performance in their first T20 win of the year, and their first win at home for over a year, plus their first victory over Lancashire at the County Ground for six years.

Derbyshire Falcons' Captain Wayne Madsen Thrilled With Wet Win"We performed well, we bowled disciplined areas and in the field, I'm very happy with the performance. The ground fielding was excellent and especially under the wet conditions."

Madsen's side have hit the ground running in the County Championship (currently sitting pretty at the top of Division Two), but have so far struggled in the shorter formats of the game. "We've got a lot of confidence in the side, I think you can see that in our team spirit."

Derbyshire managed to defeat Lancashire via the tried and tested Duckworth/Lewis method, a format which the ICC have ratified as the best way to decide rain-affected matches, something which was almost changed by an Indian engineer called V Jayadevan, who proposed the VJD System.

Who knows if this format would have changed the Falcons' result, however, going into the last over before the umpires decided to take the players off, Derbyshire were just slightly behind the rate when Dan Redfern departed, so a final partnership by Chesney Hughes and Rana Naved saw Derbyshire up the required rate and beat the amount of target that was required by 17 runs.

Madsen added "The D/L system is a bit of a lottery, the last over was very important to us and helped us over the line."

Madsen wasn't too overly concerned with the poor performances of his overseas players, Usman Khawaja made only 3 on his return, however having to go for the runs didn't help his situation.

The Derbyshire skipper will be more pressed on how much Naved went round the park in his first T20 game for the County. Only Graeme Welch has had worse figures by a Derbyshire bowler in T20 competitions, Welch went for 0-58 from his four overs v Yorkshire in 2003, Naved went for a wicket-less 56 in his four.

"Bowlers have their days, it goes like that. He did superbly with the bat this time with Chesney, he also did well in the field."

Nottinghamshire loom tonight for the Falcons at Trent Bridge, however, the weather again is scheduled to interrupt proceedings, so Derbyshire may have to rely on the fabled cricketing scoring system that they required last night.
