Two New 3-Year Contracts And A New Signing For Derbyshire CCC

Monday 1st October 2012

Two new 3 year contracts and a new signing as Derbyshire CCC's Winter recruitment to strengthen the squad begins.

Paceman Tony Palladino and All Rounder Ross Whiteley have become the latest promotion winners to commit their long term futures to Derbyshire by each signing three year contracts, along with new signing Richard Johnson, the 24 year old wicket keeper who has signed from Warwickshire, also on a 3 year contract.

Palladino has been a star performer with the ball during Derbyshire CCC's title-winning summerPalladino (left) was star performer with the ball during the Club's title-winning summer, taking 56 first-class wickets as Derbyshire garnered more bowling points than any other in the division.

Enjoying his finest hour with a game changing 7 wicket spell versus Kent, the 29-year-old recorded three five-wicket hauls during the 2012 campaign.

Signed from Essex in 2011, Palladino has since helped himself to 108 first-class wickets in two seasons, averaging 26.01.

His new ball partnership with Tim Groenewald totalled 98 dismissals in 2012 and 198 victims during the past two seasons combined.

Palladino has also provided useful contributions with the bat, scoring a valuable half-century during the decisive final fixture against Hampshire and registering his maiden first-class century versus Australia A back in July.

"This is fantastic news for me," Palladino said. "To be able to commit the next three years to Derbyshire during the prime of my career is exactly what I wanted to do.

"The last couple of weeks have been fantastic. Winning the league and gaining promotion with this group of players was phenomenal. To now be able to sign a new contract is the icing on the cake."

Head Coach Karl Krikken added: "Tony has been incredible for us and securing his services for the next three seasons is a huge boost for the squad as we prepare for Division One cricket next season.

"He has become one of the most reliable performers with the ball on the county circuit as well capturing everything we want from a proud Derbyshire cricketer in terms of attitude, effort and endeavour."

Ross Whiteley has also capped a special September by signing a three year contract with Derbyshire. Ross Whiteley has also capped a special September by signing a three year contract with Derbyshire.

The 24-year-old, (left), who followed the recent LV= County Championship triumph with selection for the England Sixes side, was the first player that starred in the title winning team to commit to a new deal, as the Club focuses on securing the future of key players in the wake of promotion.

Whiteley, who is a graduate of the Club's Academy, scored 498 runs and took 20 wickets in first-class cricket in 2012, as well as catching the eye with a fine unbeaten half-century versus South Africa in August.

The big-hitting all-rounder played a critical hand in the title clinching victory over Hampshire with match figures of 4 for 43 and unbeaten scores of 57 and 38.

Head Coach Karl Krikken said: "It's great to be able to secure the services of Ross for the next few seasons and we're working behind the scenes towards more new contracts in the near future.

"Ross is a rapidly developing home grown cricketer who has come of age during the past two seasons and has the potential to achieve great things during his future career with the Club. He is a great advert for our Academy system."

Whiteley is preparing to represent England in the Honk Kong Sixes competition on 27th and 28th October, sandwiched by a winter furthering his cricketing education in South Australia.

He added: "With a championship winner's medal and an international call-up, followed quickly by a new contract that illustrates the club's faith in me, it's fair to say I'm a very happy cricketer.

"To achieve something so special alongside such a great group of guys in 2012 was a real career highlight and I can't wait to come back and get stuck into First Division cricket next summer."

Finally, Derbyshire's winter recruitment for Division One cricket in 2013 has begun with the signing of Warwickshire Wicket Keeper Richard Johnson. Finally, Derbyshire's winter recruitment for Division One cricket in 2013 has begun with the signing of Richard Johnson.

The 24-year-old wicketkeeper has signed from Warwickshire on a three-year contract following two loan spells at the County Ground last summer.

Johnson (left) starred with a match-winning 79 versus Yorkshire Carnegie for Derbyshire before returning to Edgbaston and helping Warwickshire to the LV= County Championship title.

Since joining the Warwickshire professional ranks in 2008, Johnson - who played junior cricket for the Bears since the Under 11s age group and attended Solihull School - has played 11 First Class games, 13 List A and 18 t20 matches for the Club.

Johnson said: "I'm absolutely over the moon to be signing. When I came here on loan earlier in the summer I fitted in really well, the lads were great to be around and everyone at the club treated me brilliantly.

"Now having this opportunity to sign for Derbyshire for three years is amazing. I can't thank the club enough and I can't wait to get started.

"The chance to play first team cricket with Derbyshire is a fantastic proposition. I have played a bit of first team cricket for Warwickshire in the past, so I am hopeful that I can add some experience to the squad in that department.

"The lads did amazing things last season and deserve to be where they are now. I'm really excited to showcase my talents in the First Division and I know that all the lads feel exactly the same."

Head Coach Karl Krikken said: "I'm delighted to welcome our first signing of the close season as we pursue our aim of becoming a stable First Division Club in 2013.

"The addition of Richard adds to our batting and wicketkeeping options at a time when intensifying competition for places is very important."
